Winter vs. Summer: The Best Time for Kitchen Installation
When Is the Best Time to Install a Kitchen, Winter or Summer?
A new kitchen is one of the bigger jobs you will take on in your home, and the time of year you choose changes more than you might think. It affects how disruptive the work feels, how quickly we can get to you, how long certain finishes take to dry, and sometimes even the price. After years of fitting kitchens across Bath and the surrounding villages, we have a clear view on the trade-offs. Here is how winter and summer stack up.
The Case for a Winter Installation
Winter has a few genuine advantages that homeowners often overlook.
- Better availability. The colder months are quieter for most fitters and suppliers, so you are far more likely to get the dates you want. If you have a fixed deadline, booking outside the summer rush gives us room to plan properly rather than squeezing you in.
- Sharper pricing. With demand lower, materials and installation slots can be a little more competitively priced. Suppliers are keener to move stock in a quiet quarter.
- You are indoors anyway. Nobody spends much time in the garden in January, so the disruption of a building site in the house feels less of a loss than it does in July.
The main thing to manage in winter is temperature. Paint, sealant, grout and tile adhesive all cure more slowly when it is cold, and a freshly plastered wall needs warmth to dry out. Our fitters keep the room heated and ventilated while we work, and we build a little extra drying time into the schedule where it is needed. Done properly, the cold is a minor consideration rather than a real obstacle.
The Case for a Summer Installation
Summer is the popular choice, and for good reason.
- Warmth and light. Longer days mean more natural light to work by, and finishes dry faster in the warmth. If you are having a lot of decorating done alongside the fit, this helps.
- Easier to live around. With good weather, cooking on a camping stove in the garden or eating outside while the kitchen is out of action is far more pleasant than doing it in the cold.
- Holiday timing. Families with children often prefer the summer break, so the household routine is already relaxed and the upheaval fits more naturally around time off.
The trade-off is demand. Summer is our busiest season, so lead times stretch and the best dates go early. If summer is your preference, book well ahead. Our kitchen installation team fills its summer diary weeks in advance.
What About the Shoulder Seasons?
For many of our Bath customers, spring and autumn hit the sweet spot. You get milder weather than deep winter, faster drying than the coldest months, and shorter waiting times than the summer peak. Autumn is also a sensible choice if you want everything finished and settled before Christmas, when a working kitchen matters most. Just avoid leaving it too late, because the pre-Christmas rush is real and slots disappear quickly.
Our Practical Recommendation
There is no single right answer, but here is how we usually guide people:
- On a budget or flexible on dates? Book in winter or early spring. You will likely pay a touch less and get the dates you want.
- Want the smoothest living experience? Go for late spring or summer, but book early.
- Need it done for a specific occasion? Work backwards from the date and add a buffer. Aim to start six to eight weeks before you need it finished.
Whatever the season, the quality of the fit comes down to preparation and the people doing the work, not the weather. If you would like to talk through timing for your own project, take a look at our kitchen renovation service or get in touch and we will help you find a slot that suits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a kitchen installation usually take?
Most of the kitchens we fit in Bath take between two and four weeks from the day we start on site to the final sign-off. The exact length depends on the size of the room, whether walls are moving, and how much plumbing and electrical work is involved. Structural changes or bespoke worktops can add a little more time.
Is it cheaper to have a kitchen fitted in winter?
It often works out slightly cheaper. Winter is a quieter period for most fitters and suppliers, so you have more room to negotiate and less competition for installation slots. Summer and the run-up to Christmas are the busiest times, which can push both prices and lead times up.
Will cold weather affect the installation?
It can if the room is left unheated, because paint, sealant, tile adhesive and grout all cure more slowly in the cold. We manage this by keeping the space warm and dry while we work and by allowing a little extra drying time where it is needed, so a winter fit is perfectly workable.
How far in advance should I book my kitchen installation?
We recommend booking six to eight weeks ahead for most times of year, and longer if you want the work finished before Christmas or during the summer holidays. Booking early gives you the pick of dates and time to order any bespoke units or worktops without a rush.
